Sin Complicates Life
Genesis 3:8-24 p2
Last week we saw how sin complicates your spiritual life and we’ll look at some further complications this morning.
Sin complicates your Relational Life In two ways…
The woman You gave…she gave me…
promise struggles Go back on the promises you made. ‘Do you promise to…’
Your sin against God affects the way you relate to other people. When Adam sinned he hid behind a fig leaf/trees/wife. Adam was willing to throw his wife under the bus/expose her to the wrath of God. He was naked/exposed! He needed to cover himself. He did this by blaming Eve - and it worked! God turned from him to Eve. But his excuses weren’t a barrier - only a speed bump – he would be brought face-to-face w/ his sin/judgment of God.
The serpent deceived me and I ate…
Eve hid behind fig leaf/trees/serpent - and it worked! God turned from Eve to the serpent. But her excuse wasn’t a barrier - only a speed bump – she would be brought face-to-face w/ her sin/ judgment of God.
Any excuse you offer/any responsibility you deflect off of yourself/ any blame you place upon another is only a speed bump. Any contrivance you devise will prove futile in the attempt to turn the searching gaze of God from you on to another. Romans 1:18-20
24 They were banished from the garden. Can you imagine the fight they had that night?
E: Adam, you ate us out of house/home.
A: If you hadn’t opened your big mouth in the 1st place.
E: You threw me under the bus.
A: You fed me poison.
E: You deserve it. I wish I had it now.
A: Well, I’d take it.
Adam lived 930 years. We don’t know when Eve died, but let’s assume she lived 900 years. She was married on the day of her creation/900 years married. That’s a long time! I may have an annoying habit that Fran can put up w/ for 50-60 years – but 900 years!
A little girl asked her father, "How did the human race come about?" The father answered, "God made Adam and Eve and they had children and so all mankind was made." Two days later she asks her mother the same question. The mother answered, "Many years ago there were monkeys, and we developed from them." The confused girl returns to her father and says: "Dad, how is it possible that you told me that the human race was created by God and Mom says we developed from monkeys?" The father answers, "That's simple, honey. I told you about the origin of my side of the family, and your mother told you about her side."
16 …your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you…
power struggles in the home. This takes two forms:
Power struggles due to lack of trust. Desire, in this context, means ‘have mastery over.’ Cf. Cain in C4. She wants to rule because she doesn’t trust him. Life is complicated when you’re insecure/on the defensive/when others don’t fulfill their promises. The intended harmony of the home gave way to power struggles.
When you are out of God’s will, relationships become complicated. When you sin against God it’s like a tack strip laid on the road to puncture tires – it’s bumpy going until the tires are repaired.
Power struggles due to difference of desire. Passive Men/Wild Women…

Headship in the:
Created order (How do I know? Adam charged w/ crime. Eve may be drinking beer in the passenger seat, but when she gave enough to Adam so that he wrecked the car, he was cited for the accident.)
Fallen order
Redeemed order
Sin complicates your Physical Life
God turned from Adam to Eve and from Eve to the serpent. But then he turned back to Eve and from Eve to Adam.
Pain in beginning of life / Toil in sustaining life / Death at end of life
The body is dead because of sin… Death is a theological/not biological problem.
Reasons for Hope
15 1st gospel promise -
God’s first act of judgment in the Bible is accompanied by his first promise of salvation…1
Goliath’s fatal wound was a head-blow.
And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.” Luke 10:18-19
20 Eve’s name – hope of a champion
LXX = Zoe. Though God had pronounced death, Adam named Eve ‘Lifegiver.’ If Adam had an unforgiving spirit and was nursing a grudge, he would have called her ‘death-bringer.’
Note: right after the curse was imposed, Adam turned to his wife and gave her a name that affirmed the purpose of God. He didn’t see her as the tool of Satan, but as the vessel of God. Though he ‘ruled over’ his wife, he did so in love. He learned to become a covering for her.
21 Animal skins – shedding of blood/atonement
The day that you eat of it you shall die… Couldn’t the Lord have spun cotton or wool for clothing? Why was death necessary? The animal skins covered their nakedness – could it be that the animals lives were taken for their lives? The blood of the animals substituted for the blood of A/E?
Picture of our salvation in Christ: He became sin that we might become… He dressed Himself in our rags that we might be clothed in His glory.
24 Exile – God’s mercy so that man would not eat/live forever in sin and its complications. You don’t have to live a complicated life. God didn’t want A/E 2b stuck and he doesn’t want u2b stuck.
