Keep the Word Out
Jeremiah 26:7-24
1-6 The Lord had something specific to say thru J to Judah… J got the word out and now he keeps the word out there.
7-11 The message is rejected
9 – point of offense. This house will be like Shiloh…
Tabernacle in Shiloh/evil of Eli’s sons/capture of ark by Philistines.
They haven’t learned the lesson of Shiloh: God is moving away from you.
The message of J: if you repent, God will relent. God desires to move toward you. Their sin moves God away/His grace moves Him toward them/repentance receives the God who is moving toward them
The attitude of people: I want a God who is moving toward me regardless of the direction I go. I don’t want to walk in God’s path, I want Him to walk in mine. In our culture of individual autonomy/self fulfillment/me- centeredness, not only do many find it tough to walk w/ God, but they find it increasingly difficult to walk w/ one another. Divorces/ quitting jobs/cutting off friendships/hostile partisan politics… Lack of submission to God filters down into an intolerance of each other.
Why marital counseling? Two people not moving in the same direction. He insists on two nights out a week with his buddies/ unaccountable spending/little assistance with children – then wonders why she is moving away from him! We r2 live on the leash of love/tether of holiness. Many want to live untethered life.
Jesus said that He would never leave/forsake you. He will never leave you, but you can quench/grieve/resist His Spirit. It can seem as if He is not w/ you because you are holding Him at arm’s length. We know that our spouses can be in the same room w/ us and seem a million miles away. There is always relationship/not always fellowship.
Why the people angry? There was good news in what J spoke/they heard only bad news. They missed the good news because they were not believing the bad news. If you don’t believe the bad news, you won’t embrace the good news. We are so accustomed to hearing the good news that the bad news is jarring to our ears.
They didn’t believe the bad news and therefore the good news seemed like bad news. If you don’t believe you have cancer/won’t take the cure. Radiation/chemo/surgery will seem like punishment and not means of healing. When sin is not so bad, grace is not so inviting. When wrath is removed, salvation has no appeal.
12-15 J’s message was the same whether he was free or bound
Sometimes circumstances can affect our message. “God is good.” Get a flat tire – “God is not so good.” J speaks the same message in/out season. When the messenger remains the same, the message remains the same. J is believing God/is steadfast. God is looking for an unchanging messenger w/ unchanging message in changing circumstances. The messes of life don’t change the messenger/message.
Your message/the gospel will be rejected/you persecuted. Will you continue to hold to the word of the Lord in faithfulness or will you begin to subtly change the message so as to take the edge off the sword of the Lord? This done w/ sexuality/uniqueness of Jesus.
16-24 The Lord upholds you
16 – how did they know J had spoken in the name of the Lord?
My sheep hear My voice. The consistency of his message with former prophets/ impact of his message upon their conscience/not changing his message under threat/willingness to die.
17-20 Hezekiah’s reception of a prophet of the Lord
20-23 Jehoiakim’s violent rejection of a prophet of the Lord
J was in danger, but he didn’t run.
Your character determines how you respond to the Word of the Lord. Hezekiah was of godly character and Jehoiakim of ungodly character. The message of the prophet (then/ now) is directed to the conscience, not primarily to the mind. Truth is more than fact. Truth appeals beyond the mind to the conscience. It is not intellectually, but spiritually comprehended.
Science/math appeal to the mind. The more scientific/mathematical an argument is/logical/makes sense/takes into consideration all the data – the more readily it is accepted.
Prophecy appeals to the character of a man. Prophecy isn’t evaluated on a logical/factual basis. In fact, the more a prophecy makes sense/fits the facts of the case/makes an airtight argument – the more violently it is rejected by those of ungodly character. Prophecy is addressed more to the moral than the logical dimension of man.
