A Four-Time Loser
Revelation 12:1-17
C12 – battle of the ages/characters set forth
SATAN CAN’T DEFEAT CHRIST 1-6
The woman is Israel 1 – cf. Gen. 37:9-10 (Not church/ Mary)
The child is Christ 2 - cf. v5
The dragon is Satan 3 – cf. v9 | his purpose: to unseat God/lead the angels in rebellion/to kill Christ/accuse the saints/destroy Israel
No wonder Jesus said: thief comes to kill/steal/destroy
4-5 Jesus attacked at birth/in the wilderness/on the cross. Satan can’t defeat Christ.

SATAN CAN’T DEFEAT THE ANGELS 7-10
This appears to be an event in mid-tribulation. In 12:4, the results of the fall of Lucifer are recorded (cf. Is. 14/Eze. 28). 7-9 record his full/final eviction from heaven. This is part of the sounding of the 7th trumpet - V10 corresponds w/ 11:15.
The one who is trying to throw you down has been thrown down. The one who accuses us now b4 God is a defeated being. The one who is seeking to defeat you has already been defeated by another. Michael says to the believer, “If I can whip him, you can too.”
Michael defeats the devil. Michael is not God. God works through delegated authority. God’s delegated authority is greater than Satan’s illegitimate authority. This holds promise for you and me.
The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name." And He said to them, "I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. Luke 10:17-19
SATAN CAN’T DEFEAT THE SAINTS 11-12
Satan fought against angels and now against saints. How is Satan overcome by saints? What is our weaponry?
Blood of Jesus Satan says: “Your sins not forgiven/you’re unclean/unholy.” God says: Jn. 3:16. Not: everyone who behaves, but everyone who believes. What am I to believe? Substitution/exchange - the guilt of my sin/ punishment for that guilt became His so that His righteousness could become mine. Romans 8:31-38 The blood of Jesus has brought you near to God and there you shall remain. The blood of Jesus demonstrates that God is for me for all eternity!
Word of testimony “Your life isn’t being transformed by the Spirit. It’s a fairy tale – it can be psychologically explained.” We point to the work of the Spirit.
They did not love their life They had a love for God/people. 1J – measure love for God by love for people. This is servanthood. Some of you are defeated by the devil because you love your life too much to give it away.
A Christian defeated by the devil is like Iceland invading/defeating the US, or Mike Tyson being beat up by Richard Simmons. You have all the resources of heaven/power of the Holy Spirit. Yes, the devil is powerful, but you have more authority.
SATAN CAN’T DEFEAT ISRAEL 13-17
V13 takes up the theme left off in v6. Dan.9/2Th2 – antichrist declares himself god and demands worship. Israel will object to the worship of the beast/this will inspire his satanic wrath. She will flee and God will protect her. God still has a plan for Israel and therefore the dragon hates her.
Satan is the driving force behind anti-Semitism through history. Anti-Semitism is demonic -
* Egypt - the ruler tried to destroy God's people.
* Assyria - Hamon tried to kill every Jew in the empire.
* Rome - Claudius kicked Jews out of Rome/Nero killed Jew & Messianic Jew/Vespasian & Titus killed more than a million Jews.
* March through history notes persecution of Jews in every area of Europe/east. Jews were killed by the tens of thousands in Italy/ France/Spain. Hitler/Stalin both attempted to wipe out the Jews, which resulted in a Holocaust so severe that we still do not have all the facts. Estimates of murdered Jews are in excess of six million.
BECAUSE OF THE DEVIL: sustained hatred for the Jew -

In 2009, for example, Israel was subjected to three times as many UN condemnations as Sudan, where the black population is being systematically wiped out by the Arab government/militia. Israel was subjected to six times as many UN condemnations as Iran, where stoning of women/executions of political dissidents and homosexuals/rampant discrimination against non-Muslims are a way of life. And Israel was subjected to nearly seven times as many UN condemnations as Saudi Arabia — which forbids non-Islamic religious worship/strictly segregates men and women.

BECAUSE OF GOD: survival of the Jewish people. In the middle of the tribulation there will be a wave of Jew hating/Israel hating savagery. But God will help her in the tribulation and save her at the end of it.
The book of Revelation is about God exercising His authority/using His power to bring planet earth in line w/ His plans/purposes. In this book the unstoppable purpose of God is everywhere 2b seen. Yet, in C13, we see that the devil has great authority given to him. C13 makes the devil look like the most powerful being in the universe as the antichrist makes his bid for power/takes the place of Christ/makes war w/ saints/Israel. C13 makes the devil look like history’s greatest winner. Which brings us to the reason for C12.
In C12 we see the devil defeated four times. The Lord wants u2c that the devil who appears so powerful in C13 is actually a defeated enemy in C12. Even b4 he dominates the world scene in C13 (probably most studied chapter), Satan is a four-time loser.
It may look like Satan is all-powerful and has the world in his grip in C13 – but it’s all temporary/limited. His authority is short-lived and he is already defeated – defeated by Christ on the cross and in His resurrection. The devil is a four-time loser. And in Christ, you are an all-time winner.
The book of Revelation ends w/ losers and winners. Not everyone gets a trophy in real life, nor in eternity. Which side are you on?
