The Second Word

Jeremiah 13:1-27

This chapter records the ministry of J during the brief reign of Jehoiachin.  (We will read more of him later in J).  Jehoiachin followed the 11 year reign of his father Jehoiakim.  Read 2 Kings 23:36 – 24:16.

Jehoiachin came to the throne near the time of the Babylonian siege. He surrendered to Nebuchadnezzar with all the royal household/court/much wealth. He was carried prisoner to Babylon, and with him ten thousand high-class captives, leaving only the poorer under his successor Zedekiah.

The nation of Judah had great honor.  She was given the high spiritual privilege of being the people of God.  She was given great prosperity and was blessed w/ a rich land/bountiful harvests.  But sin/selfishness robbed her of both.  Yet even in the dark times they experienced, God reveals to J a way back n2 the promise of God.

1-2  Linen waistband – God had called Israel/fastened them to Himself (11). Priestly garments were made of linen/symbolic of the nation’s calling to be holy, a kingdom of priests unto the Lord.

No water – don’t wash it - let it become dirtier/dirtier.  As they became/remained unclean, as sin ruined them, God, by reason of His holiness, had to judge them.  Something holy that becomes unholy is something ruined.  toothbrush

3  …2nd time… J obeyed the 1st word until he received the 2nd word.  We don’t know how long it was – days/weeks/months.  J had a public ministry and, no doubt, people saw this waistband becoming dirtier by the day.  They probably thought it strange.  But J kept obeying the word God spoke to him.  God hadn’t told him to remove it.

Are you obeying the 1st word of the Lord?  Here’s what I mean – Husbands - love wife/wives - respect husband.  “But pastor, you don’t know how difficult it is.  Our marriage is like J’s waistband – it is becoming more unseemly every day.” Did you hear a 2nd word that releases you from the 1st word?  If not, why have you stopped?  Apply to share Christ/ pray w/o ceasing – have you heard a 2nd word that would make you stop doing the 1st one?  J kept obeying 1st word until he heard 2nd word.

4-7  Euphrates – 1) a graphic picture of how foreign influence had corrupted Israel  2) symbolized the 70 years of captivity and what it would do to Israel.

8-11  Israel/Judah was to cling (cleave – Gen. 2:24) to the Lord.  V11 - tells the purpose: that they might be, for the Lord, a people of renown/praise/ glory.

As Israel clung to the Lord, the beauty of the Lord would become the beauty of their lives.  This, in turn, would bring glory/praise to the Lord.  Even as a married couple complement one another and reflect one another, Israel was to glorify/magnify the Lord.  As they clung/came to know more and more of God/what He was like, His beauty would become theirs/their praise of Him would increase.

One Sunday as they drove home from church, a little girl turned to her mother and said, "Mommy, there's something about the preacher's message this morning that I don't understand." The mother said, "Oh? What is it?" The little girl replied, "Well, he said that God is bigger than we are. He said God is so big that He could hold the whole world in His hand. Is that true?" The mother replied, "Yes, that's true, honey." "But Mommy, he also said that God comes to live inside of us when we believe in Jesus as our Savior. Is that true, too?" Again, the mother assured the little girl that what the pastor had said was true. With a puzzled look on her face the little girl then asked, "If God is bigger than us and He lives in us, wouldn't He show through?"

And that’s the way it is to be w/ us – as we cling to the Lord, as he lives in us, something of God is to be seen in our lives.

But something short-circuited the purpose of God.  Idolatry corrupted Israel’s calling to be holy/a peculiar people.  They didn’t keep the 1st word that God spoke and didn’t listen to the 2nd word.  By disobedience they robbed God of the glory He was due.  What happened to the waistband happened to them.

But you will perish among the nations, and your enemies’ land will consume you. So those of you who may be left will rot away because of their iniquity in the lands of your enemies; and also because of the iniquities of their forefathers they will rot away with them.  Leviticus 26:38-39

12-14  A slogan of prosperity was turned into a message of judgment.  Every jug filled w/ wine is equivalent to a car in every garage.  But J turns it around – even as every jug is 2b filled w/ wine, every person is 2b filled w/ the wrath of God.

Even as the linen waistband was ruined, so the prosperity of the nation would be turned to judgment.  The blessing of Israel comes to nothing – both her spiritual privilege/natural strengths are useless.  The waistband is ruined/pots are shattered.

15-17  There’s a way to undo the threatened judgment – give glory to God.  “Give glory to God” = ‘confess your sin’.  (Zondervan BC).

Give glory – opposite of pride.  If there is someone who has done a good job or who is better at what they do than you are, pride w/holds praise.  Praise/glory announces the absence of pride.    Praise pushes back the darkness of self/sin.  The high honor of spiritual privilege/natural prosperity of Israel can be restored by humbling themselves b4 God.  James 4:6-8.  This is how God measures a man.

Some years ago the Raleigh, North Carolina News & Observer published an article entitled: "How Do You Measure Up As A Man?”  The article stated that some extensive research had been conducted on the 20th century standards for measuring a man.  Here are the criteria, men, see how you measure up.

1.  His ability to make and conserve money

2.  The cost/style/age of his car

3.  How much hair he has

4.  His strength/size

5.  The job he holds/how successful he is at it

6. What sports he likes

7.  How many clubs he belongs to

8.  His aggressiveness/reliability

God has different criteria: give glory to God!

18-19  This is addressed to King Jehoiachin/Queen Nehushta.

Crown of 18 is cities of 19.  The king would not give glory to/trust in God – kept scheming ways to dodge the Babylonians taking over the nation/city.  Because he wouldn’t cast his crown at the feet of the Lord, the crown will be taken from him.

20-27  Leopard spots… Since Israel’s character is fixed, God’s judgment is fixed.

The C begins w/ Israel as a ruined waistband/ends w/ her as a burnt-out prostitute who has allowed others to enter and conceive w/in her rebellion against God.

May you walk in continued obedience b4 the Lord.
