The Refusal to Repent
Jeremiah 5
3. Looking for a man who looks for truth
1 America is not at the point of v1, yet we do see God’s judgment on people who refuse to repent. The judgment we see isn’t judgment on America as a nation, but the judgment of a mass of individuals who have given themselves over to sin. Ten people who refuse to repent experience judgment individually and then that individual judgment is experienced collectively together. This can be seen with men in prison who do violence to one another/in marriage where two people continue to break one another/in entertainment where the immorality of the performer is applauded and distributed by those who are as immoral and this spreads.
America is experiencing the judgment of God upon us for the increase in individual ungodliness, and at the same time we are experiencing the preserving grace of God by reason of the presence of so many who sincerely seek after God and faithfulness.
When you discipline your children, you don’t wipe them out. You may take away their driving privileges and ground them for the weekend, but they can still watch TV/use computer. Your children experience judgment/mercy at same time.
Righteousness preserves a nation. Only one man among the populace seeking after God’s heart would have been enough to secure the pardon of God/avert judgment. (What if Abraham had interceded to the point of asking for just one righteous man in Sodom?)
You can see what grieves the Lord’s heart in this passage -
No one does justice They are not necessarily doing injustice, but no one cares for the little guy. No one is concerned that the weak are getting walked on/rolled over. The mood of the day is self-survival. Everyone is the priest/Levite and none are the Good Samaritan.
Dr. Karl Menninger gave a lecture on mental health & was answering questions from the audience. One man asked, "What would you advise a person to do if that person felt a nervous breakdown coming on?" Everyone there expected him to answer, "Consult a psychiatrist." But they were surprised when he replied: Leave your house, go across the railroad tracks, find someone who is in need, and do something to help that person.
No one seeks truth In some translations truth is rendered faithfulness. The thought is that not only is there no one who seeks justice for others, there is no one who seeks faithfulness in himself. There is no one who says, “I want 2b what God desires/please the Lord.”
No one speaks truth They hide behind a false piety. The Lord seeks truth. God’s dealings are designed to bring you to an end of yourself, to bring you to truth.
The object of a bike race in India is to go the shortest distance possible within a specified time. Everyone is lined up at the line and when the gun sounds all the bicycles try to stay put. Racers are disqualified if they tip over or one of their feet touched the ground. And so they would inch forward just enough to keep the bike balanced. When the time was up and another gun sounded, the person who had gone the farthest was the loser and the person closest to the starting line was the winner.
Imagine someone getting into that race who didn’t understand how it works. When the race starts, he pedals as hard/fast as he possibly can. He’s out of breath/sweating/ delighted because the other racers are back there at the starting line. He doesn’t let up, but pushes harder/faster/longer/stronger.
At last he hears the gun that ends the race and is delighted because he is unquestionably the winner. Except he is unquestionably the loser…
Judah didn’t understand what it meant to walk w/ God. In their ignorance they got further/further from the Lord. The psalmist said, “The nearness of God is my good…” The goal of life isn’t how much you can accomplish/how fast you can go/how many people know who you are – it’s to abide in Christ moment-by-moment. Cf. James 4:13ff
They did not weaken/They refused to take correction/They refuse to repent
No grieving for sin/no openness to correction/no thought of turning. Sin is give-and-take - not only do you do sin, sin does something to you. Sin is not like food that passes through you, it is like poison that accumulates and destroys. Sin hardens your heart/dulls your thinking/captures your will. J sees a nation gripped by sin/refusing to repent/with the judgment of God bearing down upon them.
All of this is interesting in light of King Josiah’s reforms. While the reform is far reaching it is not deep reaching. The hearts of the people are untouched. All the hallmarks of personal revival are absent. There is not a love for others/truth/faithfulness/the presence of God/no conviction of sin.
4-6 Jeremiah comes to agree with the Lord
At first, J says, “No way, give me a crack at this.” Then, “You’re right, Lord.” J discovers that the noble of the land aren’t noble. The people who caused Jesus the most trouble were the great of the land. They resisted early and their resistance only escalated.
7-9 Since no one is seeking God, here is judgment
10-18 Selective/surgical judgment
10, 18 – not a complete destruction. God is stripping away branches that are not His. The branch abides in the vine/gets its life from the vine. God is stripping every branch connected to a wild vine for the vine determines the fruit, not the branch. They violated 1st commandment. The point isn’t to paint a picture of how bad they were/we are. The denunciations of J provide a backdrop for judgment. He presents a people who refuse to live by the two greatest commandments and therefore invite judgment.
20-23 The mutiny of the people
20-23 What is the boundary that the Lord has placed for the people? The Word of God/the conscience of the people/the priests and prophets. The people roar/toss and cross-over/prevail. They will harden their conscience and find prophets to make the Word say what they want it to say.
24-29 The blindness of the people
They are blind to their blessings/God’s discipline/their sin
30-31 The folly of the people
J sees a nation gripped by sin/refusing to repent/with the judgment of God bearing down upon them. What will they do at the end of it – when false prophets/independent priesthood/undiscerning people
