Why you need to study the book of Revelation - Revelation 1:1-8
Crossword puzzles - answers in the back of the book.
The book of Revelation is not hard to understand – it is not a veiling, but an unveiling. It comes w/ its own outline – 1:19
The things which were C1
The things which are C2-3 7 churches in various conditions of health
The things which shall take place C4-22
The rapture of the church C4-5
The great tribulation C6-18 Seals/trumpets/bowls
The 2nd coming of Jesus C19
The Millennium C20
Eternity C21-22
Seven reasons you need to study the book of Revelation -
o 1. God wants you to see Jesus Christ 1
This book is not just a revelation of the plans/purposes of Jesus, but of His person. This is a revelation of Jesus in His glory/power. In the gospels we see completeness of work/not fullness of glory. Some leaks out in Transfiguration. Here, we feast our eyes.
Book of Revelation - not just chronological unfolding of heavenly decrees in the arena of human history. If all you come away w/ is a chart of events, you’ve missed it. You can be right about your chart and wrong about Jesus. You can be right about Jesus and wrong about your chart. Jesus wants u2c Him. This isn’t just knowledge of future, but of Jesus Christ. W/o Him you have no future.
It is bond-servants who see the Lord. A bond-servant is one who is totally sold out for Christ – this is why John was on Patmos.
Bond-servant: a service which is not a matter of choice for the one who renders it, but he has to perform whether he likes or not, because he is subject as a slave to an alien will, to the will of his owner. The bond-servant has no right of personal choice. The Greek finds his personal dignity in the fact that he is free. The Greek saw the bond-servant as the perversion of human nature. TDNT
The Greek cultural value system despised the slave/sees them as demeaned. God rejoices in His bond-servants/instead of seeing this as a perversion of human nature, He has purposed that this is the avenue to the ennobling of the human spirit. A bond-servant of God is blessed because he/she can hear God and respond.
o 2. God wants you to know what’s going to happen in the future 1-2
God wants you to know the things that will shortly take place. Why? Prepare yourself. We’ve all seen pictures of the devastating Haiti quake. The events in Revelation are not like Y2K speed bump – it’s like Haiti - history is going to slam into a brick wall.
Communicated = signified. More than 500 allusions to the OT. This book is full of symbols/signs/metaphors/analogies/pictures. Why not just say, “The rapture will be in 2,000 years…?” Few would be looking up! I can get drunk/sober up b4 He gets here. The indeterminate timing of end times events is a gift.
o 3. God wants you to be blessed 1-3
Reads/hears/heeds = ‘pay attention to’ and ‘obey’. Obey its commands/ pay attention to its warnings/believe its promises.
What does it mean 2b blessed? 1st used to describe the transcendent happiness of the gods – a life beyond care/labor/ death. It describes the rich who are above the cares/worries of poorer people. It is the one who is above the pains/labors of this life. He/she is not torn apart by what tears others apart. 2B blessed is 2b lifted above the decay/death of this world. You can forgive when sinned against/bless when cursed/love when hated/secure in hardship/bear fruit in barrenness.
2b blessed you have to do something. Blessing through obedience – the bondservants are blessed. They are not quaking b4 the revelations of this book. If you know Jesus – no fear. Father/son in ship during storm. A sword is going 2b unleashed – the Father holds it.
o 4. God wants you to be convinced of His final triumph
Revelation is the capstone of all Biblical revelation. What God began in Genesis, He brings to completion in Revelation.
Similarities: new beginning/new order/tree of life/bride/river/walk of God with man/same moral and spiritual ideals
Contrasts: paradise closed/reopened, dispossession through sin/ repossession through grace, curse imposed/removed, access to tree disinherited in Adam/re-inherited in Christ, beginning of sorrow and death/death no more, defiled garden/glorious city, man’s dominion broken/restored, triumph of serpent/triumph of lamb
Completions: garden to city/human sin in its beginning to full and final development in evil personages/physical death to eternal spiritual death/sentence passed on Satan to sentence executed/ promise of Savior brought to fruition/anticipation to realization/ foundation stone to capstone
Most damaging to your car engine is the first few seconds after it turns over and the oil is still in the pan. Metal slamming against unlubricated metal will eventually take its toll and cause your car to break down. The events of the last days slamming against you will take their toll unless you are convinced of final triumph.
o 5. God wants you to receive from Him 4-6a
# The book of Revelation will take us on a journey through the end of the world into the beginning of the next – from time to eternity. The events of Revelation are heavy stuff. From the beginning of this book God wants u2 know that He is on the throne. God doesn’t want u2b frightened by His revelations, but comforted in them. Revelation is a book of world ending judgments/great consolation. Grace/peace 2u from:
o The Father - Who was and who is and who is to arrive (He’s on His throne)
He is the same through time. Though all on earth changes, He remains the same. God is the anchor in a sea of change. Jesus Christ is our connection to the anchor of God the Father.
+ The Spirit
God is/God knows/God acts – Father/Son/Spirit. When the Spirit is mentioned in Revelation, He is mainly imparting knowledge.
# The Son
3 descriptions of Jesus – faithful witness/1st born from dead/ruler of kings
3 deeds of Jesus – loves us/released us from sins/made us 2ba kingdom of priests
There’s a correlation between the deeds/descriptions of Jesus –
Faithfully witnesses to us of His love.
As the 1st born from the dead He has released us from our sins by His blood.
As the ruler of kings He has made us 2ba kingdom of priests.
o 6. God wants you to worship Him 6b
To Him be glory and dominion forever. Worship is response to revelation of God. We’ll see this a lot in this book.
o 7. God wants you to be ready for His soon return 7-8
With the clouds – 1 Th. 4:17. Not mystical, but actual return.
Every eye/pierced Him – Zech. 12:10-14
How would you like to be the basketball coach who cut Michael Jordan from the team when he was 15/the one who told Paul McCartney he couldn’t sing/the Decca record executive that didn’t sign the Beatles because guitar groups were on their way out/the one living in the last days, right on the edge of eternity, and not know it?
The Father - Who was and who is and who is to arrive (He’s on His throne)
When kids were younger and I was reading in one room and they were in another I would hear grunts/groans/loud thumps on the floor. I go to investigate and the boys are wrestling on the floor and really seem to be into it. But Fran is sitting there unconcerned and so I go back to my chair. Fran is there, she is supervising – and I have a peace.
In Revelation, many are grunting/groaning/many things are going ‘thump’ on planet earth. But here, at the beginning, we find God on His throne. It is easy to become frightened while reading this book. This is why we are given so many glimpses into heaven – to see that God is still on the throne.
o The Spirit
Seven Spirits = 3+4. # of earth & # of heaven. Sacred # that Satan seeks to imitate (13:1) Not # of perfection, but completeness. The seven Spirits represent the completeness of His workings.
There are seven churches/lampstands/stars in Christ’s right hand/lamps of fire b4 the throne/horns and eyes of the Lamb/seals of the book/angels b4 throne/thunders/heads of the beast/heads of the dragon/diadems/angels with seven trumpets/last plagues/ mountains/kings/seals/trumpets/bowls of wrath.
+ The Son
The faithful witness - PROPHET: someone who tells it straight/walks it straight/stands by it no matter what.
The 1st born from the dead – PRIEST: Go-between God and man
The ruler of the kings of the earth - KING
Released us from our sins by His blood – Calvary in view. Your sins imprisoned and held you in chains.
Made us to be a kingdom – the realm of His rule.
