Isaiah 63

1a  The judgment of Edom is a major theme of prophecy.

Edom personally

Story of Esau/Jacob.  Gen. 25:30  ‘Red stuff’ = Edom.  He sold his birthright/Jacob stole his blessing.

o Esau (father of the Edomites) wanted to kill Jacob and the same spirit of hatred/violence has possessed Edom ever since.

Edom historically – Edom and Israel have a history

o Num. 20:14ff  refused passage/resisted the people of promise.
          o 2S8 – David subdues Edomites/they become Israel’s servants
          o 2C21 – 140 years b4 Isaiah – Edom revolts in days of Joram
          o 2C25 – 75 years b4 Isaiah – Amaziah slaughters Edomites
o 2C28 – days of Ahaz – Edom carried Israeli captives n2 slavery.
+ Amos describes Edom as the slave traders of the day.

Edom prophetically

Cf. Ob. 10-14; Eze. 25:12-14; Amos 1:11-12; Is. 34:1-6.

o From Genesis thru Malachi, through history/poetry/prophecy – Edom is the perpetual enemy of Israel.
o The destruction of Edom is a major prophetic theme.

Edom spiritually

    * Edom is a picture of the flesh in Scripture
o As 1st born – born to rule.  But the 2nd born ruled.  We are born as Esau and born again as Jacob.  2nd displaces 1st.
o The flesh does to us what Edom did to Israel.  The flesh would short-circuit the work of the Spirit in your life.  Romans 8:5-8
+ It’s interesting that Jacob operated in the flesh when he stole the birthright.  Jacob out-fleshed the flesh.  It’s ugly when believers act like unbelievers.  He stole what God had promised to give him – spent many years in the wilderness.
+ If he had only trusted, his story would have been different.
o Esau hated Jacob for he robbed him of his headship/the flesh hates the spirit for the spirit robs the flesh of control.  Cf. Gal. 5
o Esau saw Jacob’s preeminence as that which belonged to him.  Israel’s presence - continual reminder of what had happened.

Edom geographically (see map)

Edom shared Israel’s SE border.  They were hateful/hurtful/ hovering nearby – neighbors from hell.

From net: My neighbors have 3 poodles - bark from minute they are let out until minute they are taken in. From 6AM to as late as 11PM any day. The flesh barks all day long!

    * There is an Edom that lies on the border of every believer’s life
o Gal. 5:16-17/Rom. 7:14-25 speak of the tension of the Spirit filled/controlled life because the flesh is right there.
+ What is the flesh?  Drop the “H” and spell it backward.
+ The flesh is like fat – cannot be eliminated (like a disease), only controlled.
o The flesh wants to kill the life of God in you.  You can never let your guard down against the flesh even as Israel could never let her guard down when it came to Edom.
o 1985/21 year old matador Jose Cubero made fatal mistake/thrust final sword n2 bleeding bull which then collapsed/thinking the struggle was over, Jose turned his back/bull not dead/lunged and pierced his back, punctured his lung.
o Don’t make peace w/ the flesh.  Don’t turn your back!  Don’t think you’ve got pride/lust/envy/addictions beat.  Be watchful.  Though down/bleeding – they can still lunge.

1bff.

Edom defeated

    * How did the Lord gain victory over Edom/nations?  Rev. 19:15
          o Vv2-3 – treads/trodden/trod/trampled

Paul to Corinth: flee from temptation/idolatry

Paul to Timothy: flee from love of money/youthful lusts

                + Fleeing is winning!  Can’t eliminate/only control.
o C34 the Lord goes to Edom/C63 He returns from Edom
o Christ comes from the direction of Israel’s enemies.  From the place of our enemies, Christ has come forth in victory/glory. Jesus is triumphant over the sin/death/grave/hell/devil.
o We triumph when we walk as Jesus walked.  Gal. 5:16 – walk in Spirit and not carry out lust of the flesh…
o God amazed that no one joined w/ Him.  Let’s join w/ God – walk in the Spirit and not fulfill lust of the flesh.
