A Living Legacy
2 Peter 1:14-18
A high school teacher in California recently asked his students, “Who is your hero?” He expected a list of athletes/rock stars/rich/famous/a few token moms and dads, brothers and sisters. What he wasn’t expecting was the answer he got from 80% of his students. For 80%, their greatest “hero” was . . . themselves. THEY were their own hero. We are living in a world where the best our kids can do is come up with themselves as their own hero! Why would a roomful of high school kids believe that there is no one more “heroic” than themselves/that there is no one else worth looking up to/that there are no other lives, no other experiences, outside their own, that deserve to be honored/followed?
At one point in his life, Peter may have been in that 80%. Well n2 his adult life he was pretty high on himself/thought he was pretty hot stuff. But then he met Jesus and Jesus became his hero. Hero – one who draws you out of yourself/births nua desire 2ba better person. policeman/fireman. Classical hero had moral power which exampled sacrifice. Modern heroes (athletes/media stars) just have power which examples indulgence. When Jesus is your hero you don’t strive for more power/be a better person – lord it over/serve.
As Peter aged and grew old, Jesus remained his hero. Peter wants Jesus 2b your hero, for in Jesus the Father is fully revealed. He desires this so strongly that this is literally his dying wish.
14 I know that I will soon die
Death: lay aside my dwelling – temporary dwelling like a tent (v13). When uc someone taking down tent when camping, you assume they’re going home. In v15 he calls his death a departure (exodus) from bondage to Promised Land. Allusion to Mt. 17? Quo Vadis?
15 I want to leave something w/ you
Peter knows that he is about to die/knows that work isn’t done yet - there’s a little more to do. He wants to leave a legacy - something of the knowledge of Christ. A legacy is a gift that you pass on to others. Legacy – what you leave to your loved ones/accumulated wealth of your life deposited n2 the next generation. Death was near/Peter wanted 2 maximize influence on coming generations. He spent time he had left leaving a legacy to the church. 2 Peter/Mark?
16-19 Here’s what I want to leave w/ you: Reality of Jesus
And right off, he wants to make clear what he’s talking about. When he talks about Jesus he’s not talking about myths/philosophy. This was important then and it is important now. A myth is a story that is the product of imagination.
Why are there myths? Ancient man pondered the origin of the world/mankind. He wanted to know where he came from/how he got here. People need to have a rational explanation for how the world around them was made/how they were made/how they fit into this world. Myths help people understand the origin/purpose/destiny of life. The Greek creation myth starts out with nothing but Chaos - a living empty void from which the rest of the universe evolved. Earth emerged from this void along with Eros; which personified love. (Eros is also the only thing more powerful than the gods, because he is the undeniable/ insatiable force of lust). Earth then created Heaven. They created the Titans who became the people and the gods that lived on earth.
A myth is a story spun out of the imagination to help explain reality.
People say today, “You have your truth and I have mine.” If we were living 2,000 years ago you would hear, “You have your myth and I have mine.” The way the word ‘truth’ is used today is the way ‘myth’ was used in the ancient world. It means this: You have your way of dealing w/ reality and I have mine.
A myth is a word that comes from you/Jesus is the Word 2u. Peter was an eyewitness/ear witness to the reality of Jesus (v18). Jesus is not a philosophy – He is not the product of thought. Jesus is not a myth – He is not the product of imagination. This is testimony – not opinion/imagination. There are three aspects about the reality of Jesus that Peter wants to leave to us for it is these realities that made Jesus Peter’s hero.
Power of Jesus
The power of Jesus is the faith of life. Humankind is not as God created us – creation/fall. Something is wrong – sin. Jesus came to undo the doings of sin. He wants to move in power in your life to undo damage of sin. His life/death/resurrection – all aimed at destroying the work of the devil/forgiving sin. The power of Jesus would unmask the deception of Satan and undo the damage of sin.
When Jesus is your hero, you will approach the problems of life w/ faith in His power. How does He want His power 2b manifested in me? I used to think that Jesus would solve all my problems. Now I understand that He will help me carry my problems. Peter: I want your life 2b dominated by the power of Jesus. Some of you carry heavy burdens/painful wounds – may you know the power of Jesus.
Promise of Jesus
The promise of Jesus is the hope of life. The coming of our Lord Jesus refers to the 2nd coming/kingdom. The Bible teaches that history is moving toward an end/new beginning. When I see injustice/ oppression I know that we are moving toward the KOG when all will be set straight. When Jesus is your hero, you can trust Him w/ your present/future. Peter: I want your life 2b dominated by the promise of Jesus. When I see historical (9-11)/political developments (immorality) that oppress/threaten totalitarianism I know that I am seeing what is predicted in the Bible. I am not to live in fear and think that everything is out of control.
There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Luke 21:25-28

The person of Jesus is the love of life.
