Isaiah 43:8-13
1-7 God reasserts His ownership of Israel
Map w/ dates – captivity 587 BC/restoration 537 BC The context of the passage is restoration from the Babylonian exile. God says, “You belong to Me. I will regather you from the nations and restore you to the land of Israel once again.” Bible points to fulfilled prophecy to strengthen our faith. Theme: only God know the future.
8-13 God reestablishes His purposes for Israel
8-10a Bring out blind/deaf. They went into captivity in 587 BC being blind/deaf and now 50 years later they are still blind/deaf. They had seen God’s glory and grew blind to it. They had heard God’s word and grew deaf to it. For this – sent into exile. But now God says to bring them out. God is not done w/ Israel.
Some of you have seen God’s glory, but you are now blind to it. Some of you have heard God’s voice, and now you are deaf to it. God has shown Himself powerfully to you, but you’ve walked away preferring the passing pleasures of sin. Instead, you’ve gone through a season of trial/hardship, but God’s not done w/ U! Other people may be done w/ you, but not God – looking/longing 4 U.
God brings out the blind/deaf because he wants to put in motion a process of recovery. These are blind/deaf no longer due to rebellion (Eze. 12:2), but to lack of experience w/ God. Apply.
Bring out - God’s people are to be separated from the world and to be saturated w/ God. And unless there is separation, there is no saturation. Full sponge doesn’t soak up any more water. If you use a full sponge to mop up a mess you make more of a mess. I want to speak the word of God into your life, I want to pour into you, and if you are already full of the world, may you hear the Spirit - repent.
Repentance squeezes the sponge dry, but it doesn’t fill you up – God’s word and God’s Spirit fill you up. The Christian life doesn’t satisfy so many because when they come to God they are so full of the world that there is no place for God to pour into them.
Blind/deaf Israel is brought out in v8 and the nations are gathered together in v9. God is looking for a people who will bear witness to His greatness/glory. He is looking for a people who will know His heart and understand His ways. So He has two groups to pick from – blind/deaf Israel or the ignorant nations. In v10a He turns to blind/deaf Israel and He says, “I choose you.”
Who would bring a blind man to the stand to testify to what he has seen or a deaf man to bear witness as to what he heard? Yet this is the bold move of God. Who would pick blind/deaf for football team? God would rather have those who are blind/deaf w/ humble hearts than the seeing/hearing w/ proud hearts.
God is always looking for people who will respond to Him. 2 Ch. 16:9. The nations in v9 aren’t, but Israel in v8 had – God will take the smoking flax and fan it into flame. He will take that bruised reed and nurse it back to strength. God wants to move again!
You’ve been chosen to be a witness to God. The task of a witness is to give testimony of what she knows 1st hand – and not what she knows 2nd hand. You are My witnesses – because you have had 1st hand experience of Me, therefore you can speak. So in 10a God draws them into relationship w/ Him and in 10b-13 He grounds them in further revelation of Himself. Ezra 1:1-5 The group responding to the decree of Cyrus is the group that Isaiah is addressing. This group will go back and bear witness to God by rebuilding the temple and reinstituting animal sacrifice. This bears witness to the grace and mercy of God.
A witness is to have 1st hand experience/knowledge of certain things and the Lord says that if we are to bear witness to Him, there are four things that we are to understand.
10b ONE GOD No other God before/after/now. 1st commandment – monotheism. If there is more than one God, which one do you pay attention to? Competition. You become deaf to the voice of God as you pay attention to the other voice. No man can serve two masters (polygamy wrong based on that!). Purpose of captivity – eliminate other voices/eliminate the competition.
You can’t bear witness to God if you don’t which God to bear witness to! God would have Israel purged of her idols. When Jesus is ministering, He never prophecies against idols and high places.
11 ONE WAY No savior besides Me. Savior = Yasha’ – Yeshua from this. John 14:6. Narrow is the way. If you are pointing to other ways of salvation other than Jesus – how can you be His witness. If I hire you to stand on the street w/ a big arrow sign and want you to dance and point people to CCF, I’ll be upset if you’re pointing them to the mosque down the complex. Acts 4:12.
Some churches aren’t pointing to Christ and instead are affirming the so-called paths of salvation of other religions.
12 ONE WORD Declared/saved/proclaimed – spoke/acted. The word of God becomes the work of God. The Lord would have us pay attention to Him if we are going to be His witnesses.
No strange God – strange = ‘to turn aside’. Someone who needed to turn aside to find lodging was a stranger, foreigner passing through the land. It came to mean a prostitute. You haven’t given place to any other God but God. You haven’t paid attention to any other word but God’s word.
So you are My witness – one God/Way/Word.
13 ONE POWER The generation returning to Israel witnessed the power of God. When you understand that there is one God and one way and one word – there is the power of God. Acts 1:8 – to be His witness you need His power.
