Isaiah 34
Begin w/ 34:8 & 35:4 The Lord has a day of vengeance… but He will save you…
These chapters fast forward to the end of time. When you are watching a movie and FF to see the outcome, you rob yourself of the journey. But the Director of our lives wants us to FF to the end occasionally so we can see the outcome and be helped on our journey. FF to the end doesn’t spoil plot – in fact it helps!

WHO is Isaiah talking about?
V1: the nations and the people
In contrast to the individual nations already addressed by Isaiah.
What is Isaiah talking about?
v2 et. al. the Lord’s: indignation, wrath, destruction, slaughter, the slain, the corpses, blood, vengeance, recompense
WHERE is he talking about?
V1: the earth and the world – earthly/natural
V4: the host of heaven and the sky – cosmic/spiritual
This is more than individual, national, international, global – it’s universal. It’s not just man and the earth that has been damaged by sin, but the whole universe. Isaiah is speaking about global and universal judgment.
HOW long is he talking about?
V10: not quenched night or day, forever, from generation to generation, forever and ever
WHY will there be eternal judgment upon the nations and peoples?
V8: for the cause of Zion
Cause = to grapple, wrangle, argue. There is an argument over Zion. God says it belongs to the people to whom He gave it and the nations of the earth have a grievance with this. Zech. 12:1-5
PICTURES OF HELL
9-10 Burning
11 Emptiness (desolation/emptiness = tohu/bohu – de-creation)
12 Meaninglessness (no authority)
13 Wilderness and barrenness (curse)
14 -15 Darkness (place of demons) 14 Night monster = “Lilith.” In Assyrian/Babylonian mythology, Lilith is the feminine night demon that wanders in desert places. Lilith, by itself, means ‘nocturnal.’
16-17 The wilderness of judgment is a negative picture of life in the Garden of Eden and the Promised Land – mating/possessing.
C34 Great Tribulation giving way to eternal separation
C35 Millennial earth giving way to eternal glory
It is good to fast forward to the end and see how it is going to all work out so that you might be encouraged now.
