Isaiah 33

1-2

B’ground: 2K18:13-18 Hezekiah tried to buy off the Assyrians – about $5M in silver and $32M in gold - fantastic sums. Assyria continued to act aggressively even when paid the extortion money and dealt treacherously w/ Judah.

When you give in to sin, it demands more and more. You can’t make peace w/ the enemy of your soul. Put out milk for the stray cat & he’ll be back. When you yield to the flesh, you are feeding it. When you yield to lust/anger/resentment/indifference/greed your flesh only wants to feed more and more on these things.

But here in C33 we see Judah standing up against Assyria by bowing down to God.

Woes to Judah 28:1; 29:1, 15; 30:1; 31:1 – finally, here in 33:1, there is a woe against the enemy. Why now? V2 – …we have waited for Thee… The people finally see that all their attempts to keep Assyria at bay are fruitless and they turn to the Lord. It was more important for the Lord to discipline Judah for her sin than to punish Assyria for its sin. 2 Cor. 10:6 More important to break Judah than to destroy Assyria – more important to see change in you before situation.

C33 is a vision of what God can and will do for those who seek Him. It begins w/ a woe upon the enemy. There is a curse on Satan. He has been delivered a fatal head wound. You have the ability to resist and cast him down. This was true of Hezekiah/Sennacherib the whole time Sennacherib stalked. Lk. 10:18-19 Satan falling from heaven…authority to tread on serpents and scorpions

Sennacherib murdered by sons – I37:38

3-4

When the Word came from Isaiah to Hezekiah and Hezekiah believed it, that’s when the Lord arose. This is why we’re big on getting into the Word on a daily basis – get it into you and watch the Lord rise on your behalf.

Caterpillars/locusts – crawl over/gather the spoil.

5-6

The ideal picture of God among His people

7-12 The Lord coming to the rescue in a time of despair

7 When Assyria dealt treacherously w/ Judah/Egypt turned out to be a false hope, there was despair in the land. Judah realizes that her hopes for peace are ruined.

8 No regard for promises made/value of life

9 …what began as a weed in G3:18 ends w/ a withered world. motyer

10 Salvation is the Lord arising/being exalted/being lifted up

11-12 All your efforts have boomeranged. All that is chaff/stubble will be consumed by the breath of God and burned.

13-16 Requirement of holiness in God’s salvation

There is the realization that all help from man is in vain and that only in turning to the Lord is there salvation, but God’s salvation comes w/ an inescapable consequence – the continual burning – the holiness of God. Cf. vv11-12

Sinners in Zion – The focus turns from the enemies of Judah to the enemies of God. These enemies are not just anywhere, but specifically in Zion. When the Lord arises, sin is consumed.

What it means to walk w/ God is clearly seen – holiness of heart and life. Sinners/godless are more terrified of the holiness of God than they are of the wrath of the Assyrians.

15 Holiness of life – feet/mouth/motive/hands/ears/eyes

17-24 Life in the Millennium/Life in the Spirit

    *      Your eyes will see the King 17
    *      Your eyes will behold a far-distant land 17 (heaven, cf. Heb. 11)
    *      Your eyes will no longer see a fierce people 18-19
    *      Your eyes shall see Jerusalem 20

o            No working 21-23 The Lord is our salvation, not our ability and schemes.
o            No sickness or sin 24
