Tolerating the Intolerable

Tolerate: to allow without prohibiting or opposing. Toleration is advanced as a cultural value today, and well it should be. In a multi-cultural/ pluralistic society there are things that should be allowed w/o being prohibited/opposed – whether we agree w/ them or not. Isaiah 38 - Part 2

Pastor Tim Brown, Calvary Chapel Fremont, Wednesday May 20, 2009

Isaiah 38 p2

1  You shall die and not live

5  I shall add fifteen years to your life

What happened between v1 and v5?  Prayer.

Can prayer change the mind of God?

Did Isaiah announce the absolute or provisional will of God?

Absolute: permanent/not subject to change/unconditional

    * e.g., the cross/exodus/return from exile

Provisional: temporary/subject to change/conditional

    * e.g., God told Moses to stand aside so that He could destroy the people. Moses ...<< MORE >>

Pastor Tim Brown, Calvary Chapel Fremont, Wednesday May 13, 2009

Isaiah 38

1-3  Life was coming at Hezekiah hard and fast and then he was thrown a curve ball: “Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.”  This isn’t a flat tire or a car that won’t start – this isn’t an inconvenient trial – this is a life shattering event. Do you know where to turn when you receive news that shatters your world?

Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and his heart to the Lord.

Pastor Tim Brown, Calvary Chapel Fremont, Sunday May 10, 2009

I promise

James 5:12

Above all

More important than what I have just written is this: do not swear (not: do not cuss). Above all, do not live a life where deceitful words are coming out of your mouth. In Mt. 5, Jesus discussed murder/adultery/revenge – rough neighborhood. And sandwiched in between He talks about false oaths.

But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake ...<< MORE >>

The Assyrian army is threatening Jerusalem with destruction and Hezekiah, king of Judah, has just prayed and asked for God’s help.

The prophecy of Isaiah  21-35

21  Isaiah brought the Lord’s response to Isaiah’s prayer. He could have omitted 21b and no one would have blinked. But there is some precious truth in 21b. …because you have prayed…

Living w/ injustice

James 5:1-11  p2

THERE IS SOMETHING BAD HAPPENING TO YOU

Recap last week: Wicked rich turn a deaf ear to justice/mercy/God.

They don’t care about you or God. They will take advantage of you and there is no one to stop them. What do you do?  What do you do when there is no recourse – no law court that will deal out justice, no sane voice of righteousness, no sympathetic ear?  What do you do when no matter ...<< MORE >>

The predicament of the Hezekiah  1-7

1-4  Jerusalem is surrounded by an army that is far superior to her in size/strength. Will Jerusalem surrender to what surrounds her?  You are surrounded by that which is hostile to your faith – spirit of the times that we see fleshed out everywhere in culture: media images and messages; shifting values on sexuality, spirituality, psychology. Living with injustice – standing up in a fallen down world

James 5:1-12

1-6  the rich oppressors

Not all rich men are to weep and howl (James not rebuking riches) - only those who oppress the poor – those who don’t follow Jesus -  even if they say they do. Three reasons to weep and howl.

God gives grace to the humble – therefore, submit. Submission is the essence of humility. We are familiar w/ false humility - talking trash about self, going around saying, “I’m worthless; God can’t use me;  I’m the biggest sinner.” Humility isn’t a bowed head and self deprecating speech – it is submission/obedience to God.
